For nearly 150 years, families have celebrated life's greatest moments here, creating a legacy of faith that continues today.

The story begins before the church
When Windsor was still known as Windsor Station, local leader Alexander H. Ashburn recognized the need for both education and a strong Baptist presence. In 1878, he helped bring Dr. Joseph Franklin Deans to Windsor to establish the Windsor Male and Female Academy. One year later, under the guidance of Western Branch Baptist Church, Windsor Baptist Church was officially organized in 1879.
The church building
The original church property was deeded by Alexander H. Ashburn to the church trustees in 1880.
Construction followed shortly thereafter.
The original frame sanctuary was dedicated in 1881, making it one of the oldest continuously used Baptist church sites in Isle of Wight County.
It grew with the town
For nearly 150 years, Windsor Baptist has witnessed virtually every chapter of Windsor's modern history:

A connection to Windsor's identity
One interesting historical detail is that Windsor Baptist wasn't founded in isolation. It grew alongside the Windsor Male and Female Academy, illustrating how faith and education developed together in the community. That's a wonderful story to tell because it shows the church wasn't simply built for worship. It was built to help shape the town itself.
The Beginning | 1879 — A Church Takes Root
In 1879, a small group of believers came together with a shared desire to worship God, serve their neighbors, and establish a Baptist church in the growing community of Windsor. From those humble beginnings, Windsor Baptist Church was born.
What began as a gathering of faithful people became something much greater: a spiritual home that would serve generations of families. Through changing times, new faces, and a growing community, the foundation established in 1879 has remained the same: faith in Jesus Christ and a commitment to sharing His love with others.
Building the Church | 1881 — Building More Than a Sanctuary
In 1880, Alexander H. Ashburn deeded property to the trustees of Windsor Baptist Church, providing a permanent home for the young congregation. The original frame sanctuary was dedicated in 1881.
But the people of Windsor Baptist were building much more than walls and a place to worship. They were building a community of faith.
Within these walls, generations would hear the Gospel, profess their faith, be baptized, exchange wedding vows, dedicate their children, celebrate new beginnings, and say goodbye to loved ones. The building became a landmark, but the people inside it became the church.

Across nearly a century and a half, Windsor Baptist Church has been blessed by pastors who answered God's call to lead, teach, encourage, and serve.
